[ It's late morning barely two days after Zephyr's call to those closest to Law who'd been furthest away from Coatepec when there's a knock on the door to Law's room in the Lodge. A head sticks round, one of the junior healers in the Salamanders, quietly announcing the arrival of two visitors - or rather, to query if Law is up for two.
They're tired visitors, honestly, their spiracorn ride having charged into town less than an hour ago. But here they are anyway; rest could wait, their friend could not.
Rinwell for her part is absent one owl (safe and nearby but not permitted within the healing sanctuary) and distinctly wide eyed with worry as she and Alphen are ushered in to see their friend; she lets the masked man lead the way, pausing only to take a breath before following him in, preparing herself for the worst that Zephyr warned her about.
And if her knuckles turn white as she holds tight to her cloak, so that her hands don't fly up to cover her mouth in shock, well. You'll have to forgive her if a small gasp escapes anyway.
(But he's alive. That right now is the really important part.) ]
...Hi Law. [her voice is soft, once she finds it again.] We heard you could use some company.
[ whether it's because he's drowsy and out of it or not, Law seems confused by the announcement of two visitors. the only conclusion his mind seems to want to draw is that it'd be his dad and Dohalim, who come by every day (if they even leave, sometimes—although to be frank he's completely unaware of the passage of time or just how much he's been sleeping and missing out on what goes on around him), and why would they need to ask about that? not that he doesn't want to see them, but it'd be nondescript that he'd probably just shrug it off and let the medicine drag him back under and into deep sleep again.
but then there's movement and colors in his peripheral vision that aren't the usual, and a voice he hadn't expected to hear, and his eyes blink open again, surprised. "surprised" doesn't really show as clearly as it should, since he has a hard time focusing his gaze and seems to have a long load time before what he sees and what he thinks sync up, but it could be worse. he could be so out of it he doesn't recognize them at all. ]
Guys...? You're here.
[ that part isn't surprise. of course they're here. maybe it's relief. but he can tell by the look on Rinwell's face exactly what they think, and it's hard to be fully relieved to see them when he knows he has something to be sorry for. and better yet, that he kind of... isn't sorry about it. not exactly.
but still. he reaches out a little with his good arm, the other immobilized in bandages and a sling at his side. ]
Hey... yeah. That'd be nice. Don't worry, it looks worse than it is.
[It wasn't the easiest trip, and knowing that Law was hurt made it feel like it took even longer than usual, too. But here they are: travel-weary and smelling like the road, to be sure, but they made it. They're here.
Alphen takes a moment with the healers who let them into the room, handing off a white blanket and explaining that Zephyr asked him to bring it. A few more of Law's blankets appear from his bag; he places them as neatly as he can (not very, but he tries) on a chair near the door. It's a fairly convenient way to hide the initial shock Alphen feels at seeing such a close friend in such a bad state.
The smile he offers up is soft and faint, free of the shock and the pang of regret he feels that he couldn't have been there to do something.
The regret he feels at not being able to do anything now.]
Let me guess...you've seen worse?
[Wry, dry wit. Even in his present state, Law probably knows it's not as simple as it looks worse than it is. Maybe he even understands that these two don't buy his tough-guy act for a second.]
[ You can be sorry for scaring them half to death when they got the news of how close you came to it!
(Yet Rinwell probably won't begrudge his choice, if he tells her the why of it. Probably..)
She huffs immediately in reply to Alphen, even though it is clear she's not who that question was directed at. Her eyes don't move from Law as she steps around the side of his bed, on the side of the arm that had reached towards them in greeting. ]
I can't believe you. [there's a fussy tone in her voice, as she forces a pout.] We ride all the way here at top speed, and here you are being a terrible liar.
[ For all his bluster, she can at least feel assured he is still there, no matter how much he'd like them to ignore the way he lies back listless against the pillows. There's a hesitant, aborted gesture, hand moving forward then retreating back before she can reach for his hand. ]
Oh, yeah... totally. You should see the other guy.
[ "the other guy" is a dragon. to be fair, they did do a pretty good number on that wyvern even before Zephyr lost his absolute gourd and murdered it to oblivion in wolf form, as well as a bunch of them before then, but... yeah, that all kind of pales when stacked against the fact that Law's absolutely wrecked and isn't going to be running around causing trouble for awhile. (or so they think.) frankly, he hasn't really fully grasped the state he's in—he's been too out of it at best to really absorb the information whenever anyone has explained why he can't just get up and go wherever and just how bad it all is. maybe it'll be harder for him to put a smile on his face and make jokes about it once he does, but in the meantime, it makes him feel better to try and soften the blow than let Alphen and Rinwell keep looking at him the way they do.
his tragically unheld hand settles over his stomach, his wavering smile weak as he slowly shifts his drowsy gaze from one to the other. covered up by the blanket, his left shoulder is all there really is to see, save for a cut here and there on his hands and arms (that could have happened anywhere, anytime). everything from the neck up was spared, so it's easy to play pretend like there isn't more to worry about. ]
I guess you guys already talked to dad... I don't remember if he told me you were coming. I kinda just sleep a lot. The medicine here's no joke, but it tastes disgusting and I barfed on Salamander. Or... maybe Dohalim. Not sure which.
[Alphen kind of gives him a look. You know the one. Come on, Law.
He summons as much levity in that look as he possibly can, but -- it's not much. It's hard, seeing him in this state, fussed over by nurses, confined to bed, barely moving. He doesn't need to see the extent of the injuries to know they must be bad, especially with how out of it Law sounds at points.
He tries not to look or sound too worried. Law probably wouldn't want the fuss. But still...
Going for one of the chairs by the bed, Alphen sits before finally taking that hand and giving it a little squeeze. It looked lonely and disappointed, and that just wouldn't stand.]
Whoever it was, I'm sure they'll forgive you. I'm glad the medicine is helping.
[ Trust in Alphen to be braver than Rinwell, to take the hand of their friend when she could not. There's a stab of guilt in her gut, but she resists the urge to squirm about it, instead taking a seat next to Alphen.
(She'd sit on the bed, but she's not so sure that's wise - and she wouldn't want the nurses to scold her. They'd been pretty severe when warning them not to tire Law out too much.) ]
Ewww.
[yeah, that's all she has to say about the barf - but there's none of her usual "UGH BOYS ARE DISGUSTING" attitude about it. Instead, her expression softens, head tilting slightly.]
But yeah...Zephyr called us. Told us a bit about what happened. [enough to rush, but not too deep into the fine print.] Sleep is meant to be good for healing, so it's good you've been getting all the rest you need. Are you at least awake enough to eat?
[ Are they making you drink veggie smoothies here, Law? ]
[ well, he can't help the dumbest of lopsided grins when Rinwell gets grossed out. that's never not funny, no matter how shitty everything is. that and Alphen taking his hand, where positive physical touch is always a welcome change to the amount of physical misery he's in most of the rest of the time. when he's conscious, at least. he's been lucky not to be very often. of course, that smile fades a little at the thought of Zephyr making a call like that to the two of them. that must not have been easy to do, or to hear. while still firmly in camp "no takebacks, sorry not sorry," he does feel guilty about that much, at least. he doesn't much like burdening people with his problems, and this is... kind of a big problem! ]
I—yeah, did you bring food? I could eat. I don't... think I actually have yet. Uuhh, and I have to be careful with solids or something...?
[ "be careful," or in Law Language, "do it anyway but maybe kinda slower or something". he tries to shift up on his pillow a little, the movement clumsy, stilted and laborious. kicking with only one leg, and the second he so much as twinges that shoulder—his lips pull back and he stops right where he is, not daring to do any more. ]
Ngk—aa...anyway, I'm sure it's... fine. What am I gonna do, die from eating a sandwich after all of... this?
[Alphen echoes the grin a bit; that's Rinwell, alright. He glances from Law back to his bag for a moment at that question. "Careful with solids" doesn't sound great, but none of the healers seem to immediately be objecting, so...maybe it's good for him to get some food down. Get his strength back up. Still--]
It's not like I have a nice cooked steak in my bag or anything. [SORRY FRIEND. Does he have leftovers? Sure. Do they include the Accursed Greens that Law continually denounces? Also yes.] ...But I have some fruits, if that's okay. Maybe also some leftover bread.
[He looks over at Rinwell, a little sheepish. Because of course that's kind of the one thing he didn't think about.] Unless you brought something?
[ Up goes her nose, but Rinwell is not in fact offended. This time. If this can bring out that grin, then he must be on the road to recovery, right?
As for food, there's a faint hmmm, and when Alphen looks her way, there's an apologetic head shake. ]
If they warned about that, your stomach is probably too empty to start with anything solid. Or the medicine might make food react badly. [so much more barfing in your future, if you're not careful] I bet we can get some soup, though. Or just stew broth?
[ Stew should surely have enough meat to counter Law's dislike of veggies. ]
Plus it's probably easier to drink something if you've only got the one good arm right now..
[ you had to say steak, Alphen. but even the bread would be leagues above some sad, lonely broth. he'd play the "i'm already suffering and therefore deserve whatever i want" card, but he's not sure he has it in him to be that maniacal. much as he wants, loopy and useless as he is, to keep everyone's spirits up, it's not exactly a laughing matter. he's out of breath even just from that shift up on his pillow, the sound of it harsh and wheezy. ]
I don't need both hands to eat bread. I don't even need one hand to eat bread. You can just break off pieces of it and throw it in my mouth like we do for Hoo—
[... ... ... Okay, that one goes a little far even for Alphen. He makes a bit of a face.]
Sorry, Law, but I don't see that happening.
[But he doesn't give Law too much of a hard time about it. People say crazy stuff when they're so hopped up on medicine, right? Anyway, he nods back at Rinwell's suggestion. Leave it to her to find a suggestion that actually makes sense -- even if Law feels some kind of way about it.]
Stew broth would probably be good. You don't want to push yourself too hard, Law. Or your stomach. Otherwise you might end up losing your lunch again.
[... Sorry Rinwell I guess we're back to talking about barf again.]
[ defenseless and outnumbered, Law shuts his eyes and whines when Rinwell pulls on his hair. there's simply no one to blame but himself for that little slip of the tongue, drugged up or not. when he opens his eyes again, they almost don't even open at the same speed, first one and then the other—he's out of it. talk about not pushing yourself too hard, but Law wouldn't be Law if he wasn't up and being The Most, running his yap when he shouldn't be. ]
Because he didn't get sick...! He looked happier and fluffier after that, actually, so it obviously helped him bulk up. Which is what I need if I'm gonna survive this. I can't even work out.
[ or it made him fat/bloated, but okay. ]
Besides, I didn't say I did it. I'm not gonna rat on who did, though. I'm no snitch.
[ and then he looks directly, deliriously at Alphen. ]
[Oh no. No, why would you do this? Law?! Alphen has a look like a kid with a hand caught in the cookie jar, and he glances verrry briefly in Rinwell's direction, trying to look away before she notices--
It was...nice knowing you guys.
This...is fine. Fine. Just Fine. M-maybe, uh, a change of subject is in order? Perhaps?]
You're not supposed to be working out. Once your body heals, you'll be back to training in no time. Until then...the more you take it easy, the faster you'll get better.
[ Snitches get a second tug on that fashionably inexplicable hair lock, before wide brown eyes turn on Alphen. HOW COULD YOU. ]
We talked about this! [there was a campfire skit and everything!] He'll get sick, bread is bad for birds, especially ones his age!
[ It's a good thing Rinwell's aware enough that they're in a medical center, and isn't about to call down her artes here, but the disappointed look she shoots the swordsman promises an earful later.
(At the window, a feathery ball slumps. Darn it, you guuuuuys...she's never going to let him have treats now!)
Letting go of Law's hair, there's a brief ruffle of her palm across soft spikes, fingers pushing his locks back from his forehead and eyes, before Rinwell retreats back to her seat proper. ]
I haven't figured out how to make icecream here yet, so I can't offer you that— [humidity is the WORST, and so's a lack of cold box.] —but there has to be a middle ground, food wise, we haven't thought of.
[ HE DIDN'T MEAN TO OKAY!!! he doesn't know what his eyes are doing!! it's honestly shameful, if this were Cyslodia he'd deserve every bad thing that happens to him for this shoddy performance. but luckily for him (and everybody), this is not Cyslodia, and they won't have to deal with Cyslodia or any of its problems ever again.
(haha unless)
at the second tug, and also the shouting, Law whines a little louder, but he's so medicated he can't much feel it anyway, so at least there's that. even if he could, the whine is mostly affected for pity's sake, anyway. it's his only weapon when they can't get into slappy-hands fights and bickering like they usually would. besides... did he just get pet after that? he blinks once, twice, three times like someone flashed a camera in his face as Rinwell's hand leaves his peripheral vision again. ]
Uhh...
[ earth to law... sinking back into his pillow, he just shuts his eyes altogether for a moment. ]
It's okay. I'm just glad you guys are here, honestly. You're gonna stay for a minute, right?
[Aw, man, Alphen knows that look for sure. He's gonna be hearing about this all the way back to Coba, whenever they get there, however long it takes.]
I know, I know! It's just-- he had those big eyes and he kept staring while I was eating, and he looked really happy, so...
[Listen, you guys already knew he was a pushover with stuff like this, right? And Hootle is super cute. You can't really blame him for falling for that look. Right??
Still, in spite of his impending doom, he watches his two younger friends with a kind of fond look on his face. The circumstances are...bad, it's true, but the three of them being able to be together like this...it's nice. He didn't really realize how much he missed this. It feels incomplete, of course -- even with all of them here, it would, without Kisara. But it's still a nice change.]
A middle ground...maybe like a soup? Or a stew? Meat cooked that long tends to be more tender and easy to eat, right?
[ Don't fall for the cute eyes of the adorable sidekick! Ugh. Rinwell is Very Disappointed in you, big brother Alphen, and that much is clear from the Look she gives him. ]
That doesn't mean it's good for him, even if he likes it. Too much of a bad thing is really unhealthy!
[ Given the lectures she used to get about her sugar consumption, one might call her a bit of a hypocrite, save that she burns those calories quickly. Or did; she's had less sugary goodness here (and she's craving). But owls are much more delicate, and if he got sick...
Speaking of sick: there's a faint look of panic that gets sent Alphen's way when Law 404s and then sinks back into the pillows. She'd tried to be gentle! It's not her fault, is it?
..No, he's simply in the throes of recovery from grievous injury. ]
For as long as it takes you to get better. Maybe even back into fighting form, if you need it. [Rinwell keeps her voice even, trying to be reassuring. She for one has no plans to go anywhere.] I'll ask Zephyr and Dohalim what'd work well for that, I'm sure we can come up with something.
[ She's already had a thought about those little pita pockets she'd brought him from Coba once.. ]
[ Sorry for unleashing hell on you Alphen. It's always a truly wild day when he's not the one getting lectured, and better yet when he gets to listen to someone else talk themselves into a deeper pit of gonna-get-electrocutedness, but it's kind of less funny when he accidentally ratted them out and also kinda doesn't fully know how they even got to this point. He has next to no control over what his face is doing, which also explains the Law.exe malfunction that Rinwell's so worried about, and also how completely drousy and dumbfounded he looks when he opens his eyes again. It's such a slow blink, he almost blinks one eye and then the other out of sync. ]
Aww, man... don't talk about tender meat when I'm dyyyyingggg.
[ He means dying from wanting to eat that, not the... the "dying" that he very literally was only a couple of days ago, and all of... that. All things considered, and maybe this is just the meds talking, but he doesn't feel so dying-ish in the other, bad way right now at all, something he'd like to attribute to the company of his friends more than anything else. ]
Fighting form... I hope I can get back to training soon. They said my leg's broken, and my arm, i-it, uh... is bad. And I had to have some kind of surgery or something? I dunno. I don't care. I just feel like a blob laying here sleeping all the time.
[Well at least the electrocution won't hurt...?? Except his pride. He sighs -- sorry Hootle. Blame Law for your snack flow decreasing.]
You're right, Rinwell. Sorry.
[He can't help but smile at Law getting all super dramatic like this, though, because that's closer to what he'd expect. Typical, right? Chewed up and spit out by a wyvern, and he's complaining about being hungry...some things don't change. Alphen nods in Rinwell's direction to indicate his agreement.]
Rinwell's right. We're staying for the long haul. One of the neighbors is looking out for the chickens and the garden, so there's nothing to worry about.
[And boy if he doesn't sympathize with that feeling -- it wasn't so long ago that he was laid up with bandages all over, unable to do pretty much anything for a frustratingly long period of time.]
I know it's no fun to be stuck in bed, but if you try to do too much right now, it'll just make recovery take longer. Don't worry. You'll be back to training before you know it -- and I'll be first in line to go toe-to-toe with you.
[ Poor Hootle, his under the table treats will be no more...at least, until Alphen can be convinced by large innocent eyes again. As it is, there's a huff for both boys, Rinwell folding her arms across her chest as she pouts.
It drops quickly enough, head bobbing agreement. ]
You'll be sick of us by the time you're back up on your feet. But until then, you need to relax and rest. You can't push it too hard or fast before you're properly healed, or it might not heal right.
[ She presses an index finger to her chin. ]
I bet I can find some good books for you to read from the libraries!

Besides, I didn't say I did it. I'm not gonna rat on who did, though. I'm no snitch.
[ and then he looks directly, deliriously at Alphen. ]

Date: 2022-04-15 06:11 pm (UTC)It was...nice knowing you guys.
This...is fine. Fine. Just Fine. M-maybe, uh, a change of subject is in order? Perhaps?]
You're not supposed to be working out. Once your body heals, you'll be back to training in no time. Until then...the more you take it easy, the faster you'll get better.

Date: 2022-04-15 06:32 pm (UTC)We talked about this!

Date: 2022-04-15 09:17 pm (UTC)(haha unless)
at the second tug, and also the shouting, Law whines a little louder, but he's so medicated he can't much feel it anyway, so at least there's that. even if he could, the whine is mostly affected for pity's sake, anyway. it's his only weapon when they can't get into slappy-hands fights and bickering like they usually would. besides... did he just get pet after that? he blinks once, twice, three times like someone flashed a camera in his face as Rinwell's hand leaves his peripheral vision again. ]
Uhh...
[ earth to law... sinking back into his pillow, he just shuts his eyes altogether for a moment. ]
It's okay. I'm just glad you guys are here, honestly. You're gonna stay for a minute, right?

Date: 2022-04-21 04:58 pm (UTC)I know, I know!

Date: 2022-04-21 07:26 pm (UTC)That doesn't mean it's good for him, even if he likes it.

Date: 2022-04-22 05:14 pm (UTC)Aww, man... don't talk about tender meat when I'm dyyyyingggg.

Date: 2022-04-26 05:10 pm (UTC)You're right, Rinwell.

Date: 2022-04-28 09:09 pm (UTC)It drops quickly enough, head bobbing agreement. ]
You'll be sick of us by the time you're back up on your feet. But until then, you need to relax and rest. You can't push it too hard or fast before you're properly healed, or it might not heal right.
[ She presses an index finger to her chin. ]
I bet I can find some good books for you to read from the libraries!
